Until recently, Eritrea had a 2-5-3-4 formal education structure. There are still two years of pre-primary school, which has an official entry age of four and is referred to as pre-primary education. Primary school, which is known as Elementary Education, still has an official entry age of six and a duration of five grades. At the end of the cycle, students receive the Primary Certificate. Secondary school is divided into two cycles: lower secondary and upper secondary.
In the 2-5-3-4 system, lower secondary, which is known as Middle Education, consisted of grades 6-8 and culminated in the Grade 8 National Examination Certificate; upper secondary, which is known as Secondary Education, consisted of grades 9-12 and culminated in the Eritrean Secondary Education Certificate Exam (ESECE). In addition, Eritrea has one upper secondary vocational education track that lasts two years (ISCED 2011 mapping for 2016 school year).
